One of the main requirements of power quality management is the guarantee of a sinusoidal voltage waveform with adequate amplitude at each node of the network. The above, togetherwith continuously demanding performance requirements, place controlengineering as one of the most challenging technological fields. In thisperspective, many "conventional" control schemes fail to provide solid designprocedures, since they mainly require known mathematical models ofthe system and/or make assumptions that are often violated in real worldapplications. This is the reason why a lot of research activity has been concentratedon "intelligent" techniques recently.One of the most significant tools that serve in this direction, is the so calledartificial neural networks (ANN). Inspired by biological neuronal systems,ANNs have presented superb learning, adaptation, classification and functionapproximationproperties, making their use in on line system identificationand closed-loop control promising.Early enrolment of ANNs in control exhibit a vast number of papersproposing different topologies and solving various application problems. Unfortunately,only computer simulations were provided at that time, indicatinggood performance. Before hitting real-world applications, certain propertieslike stability, convergence and robustness of the ANN-based control architectures,must be obtained although such theoretical investigations thoughstarted to appear no earlier than 1992.The primary purpose of this book is to present a set of techniques, whichwould allow the design of• controllers able to guarantee stability, convergence and robustness for dynamicalsystems with unknown nonlinearities• real time schedulers for manufacturing systems.To compensate for the significant amount of uncertainty in system structure,a recently developed neural network model, named Recurrent High OrderNeural Network (RHONN), is employed. This is the major novelty of thisbook, when compared with others in the field. The relation between neuraland adaptive control is also clearly revealed.It is assumed that the reader is familiar with a standard undergraduatebackground in control theory, as well as with stability and robustness concepts. The book is the outcome of the recent research efforts of its authors.Although it is intended to be a research monograph, the book is also usefulfor an industrial audience, where the interest is mainly on implementationrather than analyzing the stability and robustness of the control algorithms.Tables are used to summarize the control schemes presented herein.Organization of the book. The book is divided into six chapters. Chapter1 is used to introduce neural networks as a method for controlling unknownnonlinear dynamical plants. A brief history is also provided. Chapter2 presents a review of the recurrent high-order neural network model and analyzesits approximation capabilities based on which all subsequent controland scheduling algorithms are developed. An indirect adaptive control schemeis proposed in Chapter 3. Its robustness owing to unmodeled dynamics is analyzedusing singular perturbation theory. Chapter 4 deals with the designof direct adaptive controllers, whose robustness is analyzed for various casesincluding unmodeled dynamics and additive and multiplicative external disturbances.The problem of manufacturing systems scheduling is formulatedin Chapter 5. A real time scheduler is developed to guarantee the fulfillmentof production demand, avoiding the buffer overflow phenomenon. Finally, itsimplementation on an existing manufacturing system and comparison withvarious conventional scheduling policies is discussed in Chapter 6.The book can be used in various ways. The reader who is interested instudying RHONN's approximation properties and its usage in on-line systemidentification, may read only Chapter 2. Those interested in neuroadaptivecontrol architectures should cover Chapters 2, 3 and 4, while for those wishingto elaborate on industrial scheduling issues, Chapters 2, 5 and 6 are required.A higher level course intended for graduate students that are interested ina deeper understanding of the application of RHONNs in adaptive controlsystems, could cover all chapters with emphasis on the design and stabilityproofs. Controller design methods are presented that can overcome difficulties found in these type of plants:they are distributed-parameter systems, i.e., systems with dynamics that depend on space as well as time;their dynamics is nonlinear, with a bilinear structure;there is a significant level of uncertainty in plant knowledge.Adaptive methods form the focus of the text because of the degree of uncertainty in the knowledge of plant dynamics. Parts of the text are devoted to design methods that assume only a very limited knowledge about the plant. Other parts detail methods that rely on knowledge of the dominant plant structure. These methods are more plant specific, but allow the improvement of performance.Adaptive Control of Solar Energy Collector Systems demonstrates the dynamics of solar fields to be rich enough to present a challenge to the control designer while, at the same time, simple enough to allow analytic work to be done, providing case studies on dynamics and nonlinear control design in a simple and revealing, but nontrivial way.The control approaches treated in this monograph can be generalized to apply to other plants modelled by hyperbolic partial differential equations, especially process plants in which transport phenomena occur, plants like dryers, steam super-heaters and even highway traffic.An important example, used repeatedly throughout the text, is a distributed-collector solar field installed at Plataforma Solar de Almeria, located in southern Spain. The physical differences of such actuators enjoin the use of different control schemes so as to be able fully to exploit their characteristics. The design of such control systems forms the core of this monograph. The authors show how these different control approaches are complementary, each having specific peculiarities in terms of either performance or of the structural properties of the closed-loop system.
